Road tripping with Dhaba by Claridges

Dhaba by Claridges never fails to impress with their quirks, kitsch and soul food. The kind of soul food that a true Delhiite finds real comfort in – dal makhni, kukkad, mutton curries, tandoor and freshest rotis. They come up with regular additions to the menu and their recent road trip expeditions have added some ingenious recipes inspired from their travels.
This new menu is live at all their outlets – Nehru Place, Saket and Cyberhub. We visited them at Cyberhub for a brilliant fun filled evening, quite desi in style. The place is done in their typically Indian rooted ambiance, “adarsh balak” ¬†poster art, upturned chai glasses doubling up as lamps, tyres on walls, lots of love for food and frolic.

Start with an array of their lassis – think lots of flavors of buttermilk – utterly delicious!

We tried the Gulabo – a typical rose flavored lassi and Vilayati – an incredibly delish one spiked with coffee, imagine that!

We started with Macchi tikka – bearing much resemblance to fish cakes – this machi tikka was very well marinated with whole spices, patted into thick juicy patties and shallow fried, served with coriander-mint chutney and masala onions.

Tawa Annanas – diced juicy cubes of pineapple, coated with a mildly spicy masala, cooked to a crisp covering on a tawa – a sweet and spicy affair which was truly flavorsome and nothing like grilled pineapples you might be used to.
Dhaba (4)
Bharwan omelette with garlic naan – this is a marvelous concoction – a fluffy, sapid omelette stuffed with desi chilly chicken laden with chopped onions, capsicum and masalas. Served with crisp garlic naan, this was the first thing that caught our eye and lived up to the expectation thoroughly.

Lawrence road ki tikki – a very famous locale in Amritsar, Lawrence Road is enormously famous for the street aloo tikki. While you might need to travel to Amritsar to taste the real aloo tikka, you can relish the meaty version near you. Minced meat with chane ki dal, cooked to a smooth melt in mouth texture and topped with yogurt, loads of mint chutney, red pepper and a sweet imly chutney.
Dhaba (5)
Tawa Paneer – fresh paneer, tossed on a tawa with crunchy onions, garnished with spring onions and served with mint chutney. The tawa paneer aims at preserving the real taste of the Indian cheese and is down on the spice level to heighten the zests of fresh paneer.

For mains, we tried Lilliputian portions of their famous dishes. Amritsari choley, Lasooni palak paneer, burni mutton, chicken curry, kadhai chicken, laccha parantha and Dhabe de roti. What absolutely cannot be missed is the lasooni palak paneer which packs a punch of zings and blast of flavours Рstrong garlic, creamy spinach based gravy and soft bits of paneer. The Burni mutton is a hot seller Рserved in a real burni, a delectable mutton gravy and succulent meat. The kadhi murgh  has been on their specials for the longest of times, this intriguing dish is made like a traditional kadhi but instead of besan ki pakori, you get to enjoy succulent chicken pieces.

For desserts, we tried Phirnee and Dhaba ka meetha – this was the perfect end to the meal – Gulab jamun, rabri, shahi tukda and ice cream at the bottom – the weirdest possible combination of Indian desserts put together to create a magical one.
